eCOAST is an SME working in marine environmental sciences, with offices in Ostend (Belgium) and Vlissingen (Netherlands). eCOAST is active in five fields of expertise: marine ecosystems, ecological monitoring, marine policy and law, blue economy and aquaculture and sustainable fisheries. As a spin-off research centre of Ghent University, eCOAST puts the universities resources and knowledge on marine environmental sciences to use in applied research projects. eCOAST was founded in 2010 and currently employs 10 highly trained professionals. eCOAST has its own lab facilities for benthos and (micro)plastics analysis.

Over the past 5 years, eCOAST has worked on a variety of marine environmental projects. eCOAST was the lead partner in a number of investigation on the impact of coastal nourishments on the ecosystem. eCOAST also performed numerous environmental monitoring studies in offshore windfarms, and was a member of several consortia working on the EIA of offshore windfarms, including the effects of subsea cables.

eCOAST is a trusted partner in a number of EU research projects, such as PharmaSea, in which eCOAST leads the work package on legal and policy aspects of marine biodiscoveries, and MarIBE, in which eCOAST looks at promising business models for blue growth.

eCOAST is currently heavily involved in different international legislative programs that govern the sea, such as UNCLOS (BBNJ working group), deep seabed mining (PhD project on the future exploitation EIA legislation), OSPAR (CEDA representation) and Nagoya Protocol under the CBD (specifics of marine bioresources).
